The Market Will be Around for Years to Come — a message from the Board of Celebrate Milwaukie, Inc., the Market’s parent organization
There have been rumors circulating, and it’s clear that some people have been misinformed that the City’s plans to explore development on the Market’s current site could mean the end of the Market. Nothing could be further from the truth! We have appreciated the use of the Main/Harrison block for our first 18 years, but the idea of moving the Market out into the streets of downtown is an exciting opportunity to help boost a more vibrant downtown. See our letter to the Mayor and City Council here.
We’ve known for nearly a decade that the parking lot in which the Market takes place would eventually be redeveloped, and the City’s South Downtown Plan has long included a concept of having the Market there at the south end of Main Street, near the light rail station. That location has the added benefit of an adjacent park area, and of giving Market patrons a partial view of the river — something that we do NOT have, contrary to popular misconceptions, at the current location.
But whether the Market ultimately goes there or on some other downtown streets, we’re confident that Your Market will continue to be an important community gathering place for years and years to come. We are coming up on our 20th year in 2018. We fully anticipate the Market being around for a 30th year and beyond. The Market is not the parking lot in which it happens, it is the people — vendors, musicians and patrons — who make it what it is. We love being part of the Market, and we know you do, too.
See you this Sunday for Father’s Day!
